The name of Machiavelli is used sometimes as a synonym for words “betrayal”, “insidiousness”, and “political immorality”. His last name was notorious as the one without any principles; the one that is full of political cynicism and disrespect. A long period in history, he was notable as a man inspired by a devil. Nevertheless, he was uncommon writer, whose style was to write about consequential issues and various solutions to them. One of his best known books, The Prince, was avowed as a code of dishonor and tyranny that calls for a ruthlessness to reach one’s aim. Some of the critics claim that this book is a desperate step to obtain a treatment for poor conditions of the world.
To begin with, it is very important to know that Machiavelli starts the book with the explanation of the various types of laws in the country. The approach to the power that Machiavelli shows in his book is thoroughly divergent from the other theorists. In accordance to Machiavelli’s words, people in his book are unappreciative, arguable, misleading. Furthermore, they always have a vested interest in everything they deal with (2001).
In addition, Machiavelli considers that appropriate and good principles of law are results of an appropriate army. For example, he says: “The existence of powerful military forces indicates the existence of powerful laws”. By this he means, the description of the connection between growing states and war. He changes peoples’ imagination of what makes them believe that it is a required element of states progress. Moreover, Machiavelli claims that war is a part and parcel of states establishment. A considerable part of The Prince is devoted to explaining the most vital steps of conducting a good war. For instance: what methods of city’s defense are or how to prevent a failure.
While reading the book it becomes obvious that Machiavelli also considers reputation as a crucial key point in his career. The book is showing that prince has to reverse his attitude towards people: his needs to put an end to hate unless he wants to lose his power. Machiavelli calls for the abolition of princes’ cruelty that will definitely make them benevolent. There is no argument that peoples’ goodwill is the best cover for aggression. Machiavelli notifies of the possible consequences, such as hatred and fury, if princes do not stop confiscation of belongings and disintegration of organizations.
From the ethical point of view, the book leaves not a favorable impression since it is regarded as a conflicting work. Machiavelli opines that a great deal of person’s qualities is innate. People usually show their interest to each other but mostly they are self-interested. People are hiding behind their masks. From one point of view, they are trustworthy, reliable, and kind, while from another point of view – selfish and insincere. There is a slight hint in this book that some people are not willing to obtain some dizzying heights. Determination is the word that is familiar just to those who reached some authority. Unlike them, most middle class people content themselves with their uncertainty and do not try to improve their position in society.
All in all, Machiavelli was also known as an “Old Nick”, which was almost the same as a Satan, and he was called by Jesuits a “Devil’s partner in crime”. It is not a surprise because he often supported evil over the good. The Prince was sometimes hard to read and comprehend since some of its chapters were very dark. Nevertheless, it is riddled with a lot of parallels and comparisons. This book was written approximately 500 years ago; however, it bears some pivotal ideas of the world nowadays. The Prince is an extraordinary book, but not because it shows how to manage other lands, but because it gives information that usually contradicts all respectable and ethical rules.
