Hemp can be traced back to the humanity prehistory, meaning that it is a pant that is too old, that has been continuously "Hemp (Cannibis sativa) is a very old plant that has been in continual use by human civilization since at least the invention of pottery around 10,000 years ago."(Hempschool, par, 4). One of the oldest artifacts that has been known of early before human history, is small pieces of hemp fabric, that has miraculously survived more than 8,000 years of weathering, this is because, this plant is the ancient, eco-friendly fibers. Hemp has been used in the textile and paper industry, food, materials for building, personal care products, and food for more than 5,000 years.
In the year 300 BC, both Carthage and Rome struggled for commercial and political power over hemp and the spice trade routes in the Mediterranean. It was renamed to cannabis sativa in 100AD and its medicinal uses described by Roman Surgeon. In the year 1791, the hemp duties were set by President Washington, and encouraged domestic industry. This was the year hemp was described as being a necessity and farmers were urged to grow it, other than tobacco. It received a blow in 1937, when marijuana Tax Act, prohibited hemp farming. In the year 1996, in Canada, it a gain received a boost, when a bill was passed by the Canadian federal government, that stated that the stalks of mature hemp need to be removed from a list of controlled substances, and in 1998, the same government legalized the commercial growth of industrial hemp.
Environmental Factor of Hemp
The environmental factors of hemp are obvious. This plant grows very quickly and across a broad range of geography. In places that requires many years for a tree to grow to a stage of cultivation , this hemp plant just takes 100 days to grow to maturity, so that over a period of time, hemp yields 2 to 4 times more than other plants.
The first factor is the movement from hydrocarbons to carbohydrate. Anything manufactured from hydrocarbons, can be made from carbohydrates. Wonderful products from hydrocarbons are expensive. They usually come with pollution that is very massive and very difficult to deal with. All products and benefits from hydrocarbons can also be derived from carbohydrates. From the pollution point of view, hydrocarbons are environmentally dirty as compared to carbohydrates.
Hemp has assisted in shortening the carbon cycle. In a marked contract with petroleum, it has been observed that, using fuel from annual plants; indicate that the carbon released in air will be captured by the growth of the following year. Burning of fuel has a long term effect on increased carbon level in the atmosphere this has been recorded as reduced and even at a time end, if individuals are able to switch to annual plants. The largest contributors to chlorine compound pollution are the paper mills; this is especially during bleaching papers whose fibers were from wood. This can be handled by the use of hemp and much profitable to farmers. Hemp when used in paper manufacture will produce low lignin fiber contents, hence pulping with fewer chemicals. In addition, produces pulp that is brighter naturally, for maximum brightness' if so desired, hemp is much conducive to hydrogen peroxide bleaching, which has only oxygen and water as a by-product. Other pollution comes from off gassing of dangerous compounds used in panel construction. "Hemp can be grown with little or no toxic chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides." (Erwin, 498)
Sustainable agriculture. Hemp is resistant to pests hence no need of pesticides or herbicides. During rotation, the plant leaves weed free field for the next crop. Reduction in chemical use can only be attained by rotation agriculture. A limiting factor that has for long hindered sustainable agriculture has existed in the absence of rotational crop. The most profitable plant is hemp. Farmers have been loosing their cash on wheat, corn, and soybeans, (Biewinga & Paul, 45). Hemp can really make a difference in the equation of agronomic. Since the fibers are too bulky and heavy, local companies will then be mandated to build firms near farms. This will end providing employment opportunities in the rural areas.
