In the past, there was no industrialization man used to survive by the use of natural resources. Due to population increase, the natural resources started to deplete. This meant that there was no food for man. This resulted that a man started trying to find his own ways to produce food for him to survive. It is because of this, industrialization was started by man in order to survive. Machines were being created for the purposes of making work easier in the process of food production. At first, the machines were made out of crude materials but later they were created by the use of factories. Before the factories came into being, there were no environmental pollution or greenhouse emissions. However, when the factories were created, there was pollution of the environment. As the industries increased, the pollution of the environment also increased. This led to a lot of greenhouse emission. The environment started to deteriorate globally leading to the formation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This framework led to the establishment of the Kyoto Protocols. Therefore, this essay discusses the Kyoto Protocol in depth since its inception to the time it expires.
The Kyoto Protocol was first introduced in 1997 at a conference in Kyoto, Japan. The leaders of the UNFCCC thought that it would be better for the different governments to come together and find solutions that would help them protect the world from the greenhouse emissions. In the conference, various recommendations were made for the countries so that they could be able to reduce the greenhouse emissions. At first, there were about one hundred and sixty nations in attendance of the meeting, but recently there are about one hundred and ninety nations in attendance of the review . Although it was initiated in 1997, it actually took effect on February 6, 2005. Brazil was among the first nations to become a signatory and by the end of 2011; there were more than one hundred and ninety nations.
The main purposes of the Kyoto Protocol were set in 1997 when it was introduced. One of the main purposes of the greenhouse emissions was the reduction of environmental pollution. As the different nations were growing economically, the environment was continually being affected by the different industries that were created. This resulted to the different changes in the world like global warming. Therefore, the UNFCCC thought that it was best for the nations to meet so that they could find ways in which they would reduce the environmental pollution. It is because of this, it was one of the main purposes of the Kyoto Protocol.
The reduction of the greenhouse emissions was another main purpose of the Kyoto Protocol. The nations were meant by reducing the emissions to reduce the global warming that was occurring in the different parts of the world. There was a change in the weather patterns in most of the different parts of the world. Africa or the developed nations have being the most affected. Therefore, the UNFCCC thought that it would be best if the issue was discussed and solutions were made. It is because of this reason, the greenhouse emissions became among the main purposes of the Kyoto Protocol.
The recommendation of the Kyoto Protocol
After the realization of the main purposes of the Kyoto Protocol, several targets were set out for the different nations. However, it was sought that the nations should be categorized in different groups in accordance to the GHG were emitting in the atmosphere. The targets were set especially for the developed and European nations to reduce the greenhouse gases (GHG) by 5.2%. These nations were expected to fulfill this requirement by the end of 2012 when the Kyoto Protocol will be expiring. It should be noted that the Kyoto Protocol and the UNFCCC are different from one another. The UNFCCC was a framework to encourage the industrialized countries to stabilize the GHG to reduce environmental pollution while the Kyoto Protocol was meant for the countries to commit themselves to reduce the GHG.
The other targets that were set were that the developed nations would help the developing nations since they were the most affected by the greenhouse emissions. The most industrialized countries or the developed nations were the ones causing most of the greenhouse emissions. Additionally, they had resources as compared to the developing nations. Therefore, they had to help the developing nations to cope with the effects of the global warming. The countries were also meant to minimize and account for every greenhouse made for the different nations. Lastly, the different nations especially those that were categorized with the highest emissions, were expected to adhere and commit to the Kyoto Protocol to reduce the green house emissions.
In everything, whether good or bad, there are expectations of criticism. These criticisms fall on both sides: those against the motion or those for the motions. In this case, there were those who were against the Kyoto Protocol and those that supported the Kyoto Protocol. The opponents of the Kyoto Protocol argued that the main purposes of the protocol were unfair to most of the nations. It was not clear about the method that was going to be used to measure the GHG. That was because most of the nations did not have a good geological system that would handle the measurement of these emissions. Additionally, some countries had an unfair advantage because they had ways to reduce the greenhouse emissions caused by the natural resources. For instance, some countries have forest cover, which helps them in the reduction of the greenhouse emissions .
Another criticisms the opponents had was the different disadvantages the Kyoto Protocol came with. They said that because of the reduction of the greenhouse emission the different nations were bound to reduce their economic growth. This means that the nations had to reduce their productivity in order to reduce the emission of the GHG. This resulted to the reduction in the economic growth of the nations. Therefore, the opponents argued that, instead of helping the world, it would actually lead to more troubles. Lastly, the different targets that were set by the Kyoto Protocol have not yet been met in full. This means that they will not be achieved by the time the Kyoto Protocol expires in the year of 2012.
On the other hand, the proposers of the Kyoto Protocol argued that the targets would go a long way in saving the world from the global warming. Global warming had rendered many countries especially the developing nations poverty-stricken. Most of these nations depend on agriculture as the main economic activity. This meant that if the greenhouse emissions continue, they will become deserts and in the end, they will not have any economical activity that will help them to survive . As a result, the people in these nations will die at an alarming rate. Additionally, it could be the beginning of the end of the world. Therefore, the proposers argue that the Kyoto Protocol will help in stopping global warming form ending the word.
Despite the good deeds the Kyoto Protocol is providing the world, there are various disadvantages that cannot be overlooked. One of the disadvantages is the reduction in the economic growth. When the governments are told to reduce the GHG, it meant that they would reduce their output in total. This meant that it would reduce the economic growth of a nation individually leading to global reduction of economic growth. Therefore, the Kyoto Protocol is a disadvantage to the economy since it does not come up with measures that will control economic growth.
The other problem of the Kyoto protocol is that it is too lenient to the nations that are failing to meet the targets. The Kyoto Protocol does not have ways to punish those countries that do not achieve their targets. The fines that have been set or the sanctions that have been imposed on those countries that will fail to achieve their targets are not working This is because they are seen as if they are bringing enmity among the different nations. For instance, the United States of America is not rectifying its greenhouse emission according to the Kyoto Protocol and yet there are nations like Japan and Germany that are following the protocol . Germany and Japan will not relate well with the United States, thus, creating enmity that could lead to the war.
Another disadvantage of the Kyoto Protocol is that there will be loss of jobs all over the world. Since the countries have to reduce their output production, they have to find ways of doing this reduction. One of the ways they are going to reduce the output production is by firing most of their employees since they cannot sustain them with the production of goods. This job loss will create new avenues for social evils such as prostitution and other criminal activities like stealing. This is because people have to survive and if this is the only way they can survive, they will have to do it. Therefore, the Kyoto protocol has caused loss of job leading to the initiation of social evils.
Lastly, the Kyoto Protocol has the problem of not performing as expected, since the different nations have been transferring their emissions to other countries. For instance, in Germany they reduced their emission by closing most of their companies. However, the companies were taken to China where the emission continued. Although Germany reduced their emissions, China increased their emissions since the companies were transferred to them. In the real sense, nothing changed. What changed is the location of where the emissions were going to be emitted. Therefore, the Kyoto Protocol could be seen performing poorly since there is nothing that is done in such situations.
Impact of the Protocol
According to the analysis that has been taken from the different signatories of the protocol, there has been a gradual reduction of environmental pollution and greenhouse emission in general. Even though the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol has not yet met the targets, the little that has been done has led to the decrease in the rate of global warming. Therefore, it can be said that the rate of destruction has reduced gradually. Additionally, the developed countries have been able to benefit from the Kyoto Protocol because they are getting aid from the developed nations so that they can be able to cope with the global warming. This has been able to improve to the conditions of the developing countries where they are able to provide for themselves and survive on their own.
Lastly, the Kyoto Protocol has had a great impact in bringing the different nations together. When the countries are able to meet and talk together about global problems, they do not only talk about global problems, but they also talk about other issues, which can improve their relations as a whole leading to development. For example, a developing nation like Kenya is able to interact with a country like the United States of America creating more relationships, which would lead to economic development in both countries. Therefore, the Kyoto Protocol has been able to bring the different nations together despite not be able to meet the targets.
Future of global action after the expiring of the Kyoto Protocol
Global warming is a global problem and if it continues without being checked every now and then, it will lead to the destruction of the world starting with the third world countries. One of the main problems will be the change in the weather pattern of the different parts of the world. The nations of the world will start experiencing desert like climate leading to poor production in the developing nations. In the end, it will lead to death of the many people in the world. Therefore, after the Kyoto Protocol expires there is need for a new global action that will lead to the creation of a new protocol that will continue from where the Kyoto Protocol will live after it expires.
The Kyoto Protocol contains recommendations that were discussed in 1997 at Kyoto, Japan. These recommendations are meant to help the reduction of the global warming since it was one of its main purposes. Its main target was to reduce the GHG by 5.2% by the end of 2012 when it will expire. Despite the good things the Kyoto Protocol is trying to bring to the world, it has suffered various criticisms and setbacks based on agenda of the different nations. For instance, many nations are saying that the main purposes of the protocol are unreachable. The targets are not clear enough or they are not well defined. Additionally, the critics say that it is unfair to other nations and that it is very lenient to other countries. However, the protocol has had great impact in that it has brought the different nations together and it has reduced the rate of global warming. Therefore, after the Kyoto Protocol expires there would be a need to place another protocol that will be stricter and it will control the environment before it is too late.
