“What time is it?”, “Do you know where you are?”, and “Do you know what day this is?” are some of the question Navy hospital corpsman, Army medics, emergency medical technicians, nurses, and doctors ask the patient. Time perception is the sense of time that differs from the other sense simply because time cannot be exactly perceived or reconstructed by the human brain.
According to Beckett (1954), the play Waiting for Godot is surely one of the strangest plays ever written about to be considered for scholarly work (only Sartre comes close with No Exit) yet indicates where our culture is at currently yet operates under a concept of time in the philosophy (or philosophies of man) that can be considered current that can be used as a marker to other current works to measure what our concepts of time are. Run Lola Run is a movie whose main focus was the construct of determinism, about love that causes transcendence. Run Lola Run a current German film brings about a concept of time also that can be used for work and is strange also in its implications for the belief of time. Run Lola Run and Waiting for Godot have concepts of time that can be considered current and can give us measurements of a concept that has the longest definition in the dictionary -Time (Thompson, p.955-956). According to No Exit, Sartre’s Hell is an interesting piece; there are no flames, devils nor torture chambers or souls writhing in pain. We only have a drawing room. Therefore, from the play we can safely say that the fictional time period is just contemporary with the author (taking to mind that Sartre wrote the piece in 1940 while in Paris). Sartre therefore creates a world in which his characters are punished but manages to dispel share of myths: he creates hell above the earth, people do no blink here and sleep never comes.
Little doubt that Time is one of those "Slippery Slope" and consciousness descriptions and is used indirectly to convey the messages of these works. The ideas that exist but is a necessary thing that writers' consider in their reaching for the existence of consciousness and being: yes, time is a slippery slope for perception. Perhaps nothing of time can be described in formulas of the language of math to the qualitative world of the everyday but can only be perceived and then the perceptions considered of events by the artifact of writing our minds to the external culture in to descriptions of the consciousness for time. Time is the case where the formula breaks down in the qualitative meaning - what is the general formula for time - it's just a clock. We turn to our writers of civilization whom have not broken down in the cogs of meaning and contradictory statements, whom write poems of the passage of time, whom write performances of those high perceptions of what the meanings are by example and the empathy of experience that describe their perceptions of it - what is time in Run Lola Run and Waiting for Godot and how do they compare?
In the making ofRun Lola runa, there are animated shorts that are used as time pieces that perhaps started out as the project before the production began and then were cut in later for conceptual pieces, or perhaps the producer sincerely started out with the philosophy in mind to transcend all of movie art making and bring about nonlinear time flow with the animated sequences pasted in to give continuity to the starting of new parallel scenarios but that is what we have - several parallel scenarios marked with the same animated sequences to give comparisons to scenes that are alternate series of events in Lola: instead of a clock in Lola we are shown an animation of the same series of starting events to indicate that the piece is not about marking time in the usual sense.
…tells one story three times, varying the outcome with each go-round: The constant is resourceful redhead Lola…(Who) better come up with a whole lot of money in 20 minutes…and Lola comes running — literally (TV Guide).
We are given a montage of parallel events, in Lola, but it is not until contemplation at a later moment that we begin to consider the meaning of the device of alternate sequences.
For the play Godot each day seems to be another parallel event as they cease to remember the events for the previous day, where the author Becket seems to have a sense of what could be brought about with the ideas that; the situation could be in Limbo that the characters are in and that they re-live events in cyclic ways that suggest an alternate universe when they go through their self-assigned Limbo of eating turnips on a long road - waiting for Godot: Godot is more subtle in the bringing about of time non-linearity, with the repetition of ordinary daily events for the characters with the marking of time with the blurring of human memory.
"All I know is that the hours are long, under these conditions, and constrain us to beguile them with proceedings…in the night without end of the abyssal depths?" (Beckett, p 91)
The reader or audience eventually comes to the conclusion that the two will never reach their goal of talking to Godot, and that they are in a strange place marked by unusual passages of time for the characters.
The question about the location of the characters in Godot starts to be brought to the front when we see their perceptions of time either fade or seem to be not that acute. Only after reading No Exit (Sartre, 1958) would I have been in a position to consider the location of Godot as other worldly. Perhaps they were just drug burnouts, or perhaps had Catatonic Schizophrenia the viewer considers at first but then when there appears to be mechanisms of Hell (Beckett, p 91) we consider it either that they were in their own Hells or they had really been placed there: they could be in the afterlife that people go when they had not been in the graces of the more straight and narrow of their time on earth. Time in Godot is thusly a signifier of the possible after-life because if you lose track of "it," it may be an indication of actually passing on in your life - "passing time" is possibly death in our experiences.
The characters in Godot also behave as if they had drunk the Hashish-Coffee (Ebin, 1961) as described in Drug Experience, but mainly the consideration of time as being altered because of location itself is the discussion topic rather than the cause of it however interesting it may be to consider whether it was a lingering after effect of hashish taken orally with the coffee. The focus for Godot is the location based upon the time experience and it is not apparently very attractive or comfortable. Inside the book, various writers describe their drug experience with all other drugs that were available including hashish, heroin, LSD, morphine, Opiates, bhang, hemp and other drugs. The interesting thing in particular about hash coffee is that it is the only method known to hallucinate in time itself. Scientists have reported that they achieved a sense of clarity in many things that they were working on however: there was an effect of completely losing track of the sense of time, in that without our knowing it in daily life we have an awareness that is constantly checked for the passage of time. The hash coffee experience completely removes some unknown mechanism of time checking for consciousness. There is some sort of excitation and exaggerated perceptions that are induced and an ‘accursed sweetmeat.’
In Lola we can consider also that during one of the sequences where both characters have died we are looking at the after-life and that one or more of the other scenarios are actually taking place in the after-life due to the nature of the treatment of time. Lola can then be considered one of the lesson movies where we see the effects of living the life that is not of the straight and narrow and that really they have died and that either they are repeating their mistakes in cycles of repetition or that they are watching themselves perform as if they had done something correctly or incorrectly in a consideration of some keeping track mechanism of "getting it right." We don't really on earth die three times like a video game and run through it again until we get it right but rather when we screw up we die and while lying there as the ambulance men work on us we then contemplate the alternate realities and so thusly at least two of the three scenarios in Lola are actually Limbo dreams of repetition of the mistakes in the life.
In conclusion, the two plays therefore, the location in both Godot and Lola can hence be viewed as the after-life. This is arrived at as a result of the treatment of time in the two plays. The continuous mechanism for educating people about living an upright life, guided morals and grand goodness is emphasized. Lola comes to a tragic conclusion as the characters die in horrifying circumstances; the boyfriend is affiliated to crime. Lola who is the girlfriend is brought down by her boyfriend; she goes down with her father, a gambling house and the bank. The subtle ways of every character is seen, things did not work as right and a happy ending was not realized. It’s apparent they died and probably went to hell and never got to see the desired good shepherd. Time in this play depicts the afterlife as it does not flow normally. The moral lesson learnt is that people should focus on living uprightly and keeping focus on time as they live not to dream on how it should have been when its already too late to salvage anything. Time anomaly is used in Godot, this is a mechanism to illustrate that whatever the reason may have been the two mentioned characters in the play died maybe due to old age. This happened when they were on the road to visit a character they had never seen but only heard stories about. Perhaps it might have been Saint Peter as they aspired to reach heaven but for untold reasons they had not lived an upright life.
