Free «Do you Think Hobbes is Correct in Saying that the Will is not Free» Essay Sample

There is a heated debate that surrounds the aspect of a man’s free will. The definition of free will calls for an insightful analysis of what exactly free will is. In my opinion, Hobbes is right when he says that will is not free. I support Hobbes’s argument that there is no free will. In this regard, a quick overview of Hobbes’ theory regarding free will is necessary. Thomas Hobbes is perhaps one of the most respected materialist philosophers of the 17th century. Hobbes discredits Cartesian concept of dualism and proposes the existence of the mortality of the soul. Hobbes further rejects free will and supports the determinism that refers to freedom as an absolute ability to do what one desires. Hobbes believes that men are in a state of nature and are continuously fighting wars of all against all, which makes life difficult. This paper takes a critical analysis of Hobbes’ argument that the will is not free in relation to other philosophy and current events.

Several philosophers have given various accounts of freedom. However, Thomas Hobbes posits that freedom consists of the existence of the non-external restriction of a man doing what he wants to do. Freedom and liberty should be to everyone who is not a prisoner and in chains. It should be noted that freedom is the ability to make one’s own choices and perform action, which not only inspires but also makes one happy. On the contrary, a man’s actions are influenced with various factors such as political factors, economic factors, environmental factors and social factors, and these factors form an impediment to choose a given direction of life. In this regard, the agreement of Hobbes that there is no will is justified.

A man has no free will due to a number of reasons. The concept of free will means that the freedom of a man is in all aspects of life. However, men are faced will numerous impediments in their daunting tasks of trying to realize the free will, which makes them prisoners of a number of things. To start with, since there is a social contact which has created the government, the government has constitution, rules and regulations, which is a man’s action. The interference created by the government makes a man a prisoner.

The aspects of democracy and human freedom, which are coined out of the concept of free will, are equally important in illustrating that in free will there is a hypothetical concept that only exist in mind. For instance, democracy, which is founded on the basis of free will, restricts freedom to a given limit. In democratic governments, there is freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom of association and so on. However, these freedoms are restricted within the law. Towards this, a man is not free since the law is an impediment to his absolute freedom.

In conclusion, a man has no free will, and he is in constant struggle to be out of chains. The struggle to attain freedom which is fully anchored in free will might not be realized. This is because free will leads to disorganization, which is characterized by the lack of government and as long as there is government, one cannot claim the existence of free will. In this regard, the argument presented by Hobbes that there is no free will is correct and justified. Man should therefore work to achieve some aspect of freedom which is inspired by free will since the realization of free will in itself may not be possible.
