The choice of a story format should be clear enough for the reader to comprehend it. The writer should bring out the series of actions and processes in the story that occur within a given time span in a clear way. The ideas should flow easily from one episode to another and if otherwise the events should connect.

Sequence of action in a story is crucial so that the reader can understand the events making the story. It can be done using a chronological order which brings out the happenings in a story following a clock –like path. This is used to signal the progress in the story.  Temporal expressions can also be a good format to use when telling a story that you want the reader to understand well. Words like ‘then’, ‘after’, ‘next’ and ‘thereafter’ indicates movement from one point to another without complicating the format used in the story.

Flashbacks and flash-forwards are used to format a story by bringing the past and the present together. The writer creates a clear distinction of the two to enable the reader to  follow up the story easily. The second person , ‘you’, point of view of telling a story’ is whereby the story is told using ‘you do this’ , ‘you take this’ ‘ you take that’, kind of narration. It helps create unity between the reader and the writer. The you point of view makes the reader as if he is being addressed directly by the writer.

The ‘I’ point of view captivates the mind of reader as one reads on to learn more about the character. This point of view also increases the human interest in the story and the reader is able to identify more with the character. The use of’ he,’ ‘she,’ ‘we’, is called the omniscient narrator. The story teller is ever present in every scene of the story and the reader learns about the happenings in the story through the writer without the use of a certain choice in the story.

The combination of ‘I ‘and omniscient narrator is another point of view of telling a story. The expenses of the main character are mostly used to bring out the happenings in the story. The theme of the story is made clear in the story through the emphasis of the writer on certain issues that bring out the main point of the story without confusing the reader.

The major issues can captivate the readers mind if the points one wants to pass on too the reader. The theme can be evident throughout the story by use of characters who highlight it more. For instance in children suffering from poor health, the use of a family set up in the story can be very effective. The choice  of a set is very important when the writing is trying to show how a certain issue is because if the set is wrongly picked then the theme of story fails to be captured by the reader.

Not everybody likes writing and many professions do not require writing abilities. Nevertheless writing can be an interesting hobby and very helpful privately even though one does not require special writing abilities professionally. Some 20 years ago there was a big literacy problem in the US. Due to the technological revolution that brought video games the video recorder, young people were less and less interested in learning how to read and write. By the mid 80’s the literacy problem was a major one. Students would actually graduate from high school without knowing how to read and write and had not many problems finding a job. The thing have however changed by the mid 90’s and the internet revolution, knowing how to read and write was once again popular amongst kids as it still is today. Back in 1987 a high or middle school kid didn’t need to necessarily know how to read and write in order to be accepted by other kids but if in 2008 a kid doesn’t know how to write an e mail or a SMS he or she would be considered a total looser and would have a hard time fitting in today’s adolescent society. Apart from the requirements of the modern age writing can also be a very useful tool in one’s private life.

Many psychologists consider writing a journal or a diary, a very useful stress relieving tool as well as a form of therapy. And of course whoever had a diary once, knows about the feeling when one can glances back at the past and the memories are refreshed “as if it was yesterday.” Writing can also be very useful in home economics, not everybody likes doing it but one’s home can be organized in a much better way if one tends to write down his or her responsibilities and duties along with a schedule. Such a duty and responsibility plan can also help reduce problems between spouses and/or room mates. If there is such a plan it is much more difficult for the slackly room mate or husband to avoid going shopping or doing the dishes but on the other hand it is also more difficult for the more responsible spouse or roommate to play the martyr card and avoid responsibilities due to the fact that the first one is avoiding his or hers on a bigger scale. As a matter of fact such unofficial contracts could help bring harmony to many places of living and or working even though the place or work itself does not require any writing abilities from the people.

One of the most important fields where writing can be helpful is the planning of a career or setting general goals in life: “Setting goals helps you to accomplish what is really important to you and keeps you motivated. You can have long term, mid range and short term goals. Long term goals are the major targets of your life and usually have three to five year horizons. Mid range goals are typically one to three years time spans. Short term goals move you toward each mid range and long term goal and are usually accomplished in a month to a year. In order to set goals, it is helpful if you spend some time thinking about and writing down what you hope to accomplish in the important areas of your life. Write down your long term, mid range and short term goals, if possible, for each of the following categories: school, work, relationships, self, and other. Your goals may change as your circumstances change. Periodically re-evaluate and revise your goals to achieve a balance in your life and to reflect your current priorities.”(Mount Royal College)

Maybe all of this will be obsolete in the future when the technology advances enough so that we can directly record our thoughts or computer will decide our goals in life but for the moment being writing remains one of the simplest and most beautiful forms of art and expression.

 Plagiarism and paper

Plagiarism is a common reality among all academic institutions that require a proper documentation of sources in an academic paper. It is a serious offence against educational standards and a violation of academic integrity. It is based on a student's illegitimate use of scholarly and professional sources in an academic paper or any other assignment that requires documented sources. Students often believe that appropriating another writer's words and ideas without accrediting them is merely a means to a justifiable end, but this kind of appropriation results in some form of plagiarism. Students often believe plagiarism can avoid detection, but professors accentuate the fact that plagiarism is detected and prosecuted more often than not. When a student incorporates a source in the body of a paper without acknowledging the author of that source, he or she commits an act of plagiarism. This paper will focus on the different kinds of plagiarism, the importance of avoiding plagiarizing, the legal and ethical implications of it, and detecting plagiarism.

Plagiarism is the use of unacknowledged sources by a student who wishes to use another person's words or ideas as one's own. It is a more serious offense in academia than everywhere else as education is one of the pillars of society. Students who violate academic integrity also disregard education's role as the primary influence of a functional and prosperous society. Academic integrity is based on ethical principles that allow students to develop their knowledge based on hard and honest work, which becomes indispensable to applying the same ethics in the workplace later in life. The educational process allows each student to recognize his or her flaws. Learning how to acknowledge other people's hard work is part of recognizing the merits and rewards of one's own hard and honest work. Plagiarizing is a form of cheating as it allows one to take credit for someone else’s work, and hence a failure to acknowledge sources results in the inability to work based on one's own strengths. Society rewards hard work as it is based on adapting to certain rules that enable one to enhance his or her individual potential and at the same time contribute to society. Committing plagiarism is a betrayal of society's values as no one can receive the rewards for someone else's efforts. Academia is the foundation of knowledge and experience, and plagiarism is a student's refusal to develop his or her knowledge and experience in order to benefit from someone else’s work. Thus, learning to document sources and acknowledge someone else's work constitutes the foundation of one's knowledge and experience.

The importance of not plagiarizing is part of preserving the academic integrity of a student and an academic institution. Avoiding plagiarism has two notable benefits: a student accredits a professional for his work, and the student receives credit for acknowledging a source. A student's acknowledgement of a scholarly and professional source ensures that the student adheres to research guidelines and maintains the educational standards of the college or university. The important benefit of avoiding plagiarism is the pursuit of excellence. A student's legitimate use of sources implies that he or she has avoided plagiarism and achieved academic excellence through proper documentation. Acknowledging a source enables a student to gain creative control of the body of the paper while maintaining the legitimacy of someone else's ideas.
