The main purpose of each book is to teach something or to explain. The book “Why Law Enforcement Organizations Fail: Mapping the Organizational Fault Lines in Policing. 2nd Edition”, written by Patrick O’Hara, a prominent writer and a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, explain the readers what goes wrong in the criminal justice agencies in the country. The book was published in July 2012, and, as this is the second edition, it includes some issues from the first one (for example, the murder of John Benet Ramsey as well as the describing of the investigation process; and the conflict which led to the sieges in Waco and at the MOVE House n Philadelphia), and the new cases, for example, case of Amadou Diallo and Trayvon Martin deaths; the assault on the policemen and murdering on New Orleans' Danziger Bridge after Hurricane Katrina; and the reasons of the fall of Bernard Kerik from the hero of the eleventh September to the federal criminal. In this book the author shows that such tragedies for all the humankind may influence the failures in the police, and increasing of the quantity of such failures. Patrick O’Hara builds up a frame for sorting organizational structures, operational mechanics, file or rank culture and arrogance of the bosses, which makes the whole criminal structure more untenable to failures. Besides, the author examines the process of increasing the quantity of scandals where racism issues, sexual harassment, power abuse are involved and the reasons why such scandals appear more and more often.

While reading the reviews for this book from such newspapers and magazines as “CHOICE Magazine” or “ACJS Today”, or reviews made by the professionals in this field of study, such asEli B. Silverman,Lawrence Karson and others, itmay seem that this book has no disadvantages, although it has. The main disadvantage of the book “Why Law Enforcement Organizations Fail: Mapping the Organizational Fault Lines in Policing. 2nd Edition” is that the author mentioned only several cases; on the other hand, such fault lines exist not only in criminal justice, but also in social or retributive justice. It is understandable that the author should need the whole life to make such a research, but on the other hand, people, as well as the police representatives, should understand the importance of being fair and oversee the law. Besides, it is worth to mention, that this book only the bad sides of the police work. In my opinion, after reading such a book, an average person would be disappointed in the justice system, in the police; he or she will lose any hope for saving. That is why every book of such a kind should not be sold in every book store, but hold in the libraries of the universities. On the other hand, this is an advantage of the book. The author wanted to show all the unfairness that reigns in modern society, perhaps, make people think about future. They say that lie is surrounding us: journalists lie in their articles, researchers lie about the results of an experiment, newscasters lie in the breaking new; therefore, it is better that Patrick O’Hara is not afraid to tell the truth about cruelty of the police behavior. Though, the main advantage of this book is that it includes the criminal cases from the 1980th till present times, which is also very helpful in studying criminal law or police-community relations. Such a book is a must-read for those who are interested in criminal law, especially for the students who study criminal justice, as well as for the professionals in this field of study.
