Global warming is a phenomenon that occurs when the earth is heated up. As a result, this leads to heat and light from the sun being trapped, at the atmosphere by the gaseous substances such as nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and methane (Billy, 2006). This causes retention in temperature that, leads to a drastic increase in the earth's temperature. Global warming has been a contentious issue in the current global world. U.S government has had several discussions on this striking issue that is engulfing the whole world. The fast tracking of economical changes, venturing into new technological advances and the research in environmental system have all been faced with this quagmire of global warming.
It is believed to arise due to the pollution that is exhibited in industries. The burnt fossils in form of petroleum, emitted to the atmosphere, methane that emanates from animal waste and the carbon dioxide from the exhaust of cars greatly contribute to the global warming (Mani, 2010). These gases trap a lot of heat which, leads to higher temperatures. The effects of global warming are dire both to human and the ecosystem. This paper elucidates the effects of global warming in terms of; world temperature, human beings and the ecological systems regarding their respective consequences.
Firstly, the world temperature is greatly affected by the high rate of global warming. This is manifested in variation in different climatic conditions at different regions of the world. Cool areas such as, the Antarctic and arctic regions, would face a climatic change that would have severe impact to their environment (Billy, 2006). Most of these regions are pre occupied with ice and snow. Due to the raise in temperature as a result of global warming, the ice would melt causing an increase in the sea levels. Indeed this would be dangerous as, the coastal borders would be cumbersome to maintain more so, in matters pertaining its security.
Taking into consideration, the fact that most of the ports are at the coastal regions, they tend to hold the economic status of a given nation. Increase in the expenses in the maintaining of the coastal security would lead to an increase in the levy of taxes that would in turn raise the prices of the commodities. In addition, there would be occurrence of floods which would take place in the lowland regions. The floods may sweep away human belongings causing severe damage. The ecosystem would be thrown away from the balance of nature. This manifests the irregular weather patterns that may be unfavourable for human activity. As perceived, global warming increases occurrence of hurricanes and storm which acts as a natural calamity to the environment (Mani, 2010). Presences of storms tend to destroy the coastal region and its environs due to global warming.
In addition, the snow regions are covered with ice which is white in colour. The ice reflects the light back to the atmosphere, hence providing a cooling effect to the environment. Melting of ice as a result of global warming, would lead to higher environment temperatures as; there would be no reflection of light to the atmosphere. White colour is known to be a good reflector of light as compared to dull colours. Moreover, when ice melts, it changes its status to liquid form (Billy, 2006). This would in turn desalinate the ocean water which is salty. This effect has a repercussion of screwing up the currents found in the ocean which perform the task of regulating the temperatures. Due to global warming, some regions have experienced extended droughts that manifest itself in poor agricultural economy. Farming is prohibited as high temperatures do not favour proper plant growth. The crops would be depleted leading to poor yields. This results in food crisis and, poor living conditions.
Consequently, the global warming also affects the ecological systems of the environment. Due to high temperatures, some birds would be forced to migrate away from their ecological niche and find another place. This may be a big blow especially when the region acts as a tourist attraction. The tourist would cease from touring that particular region, and the revenues from tourist attraction would decline (Tung, 1995). Cool regions such as, the Antarctic and the arctic, the various species of organisms would be endangered. Organism such as the penguins which are known to adapt in such environment, may find their existence coming to an extinct. The living vegetation may also be affected by the rise in temperatures. High temperatures might cause fire that can destroy given vegetation leading to desertification.
This is worse if there is presence of strong winds such as the Manhattan winds. In addition, the photorespiration of the plants is greatly inhibited as result of too much carbon dioxide presence in the atmosphere. This affects proper growth of plants and may lead to deterioration of vegetation (Mani, 2010). High concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere combines with vapour to form acidic rain. This acidic rain is harmful to the algae plant. It kills its cells and causes its extinction. This effect would lead to unbalanced ecosystem as algae are known to breakdown matter to provide carbon dioxide to the plant in the roots. As global warming increases there is disappearance of coral reef. This is as a result of elevated temperatures and, too much acid in water. Prolonged slow bleaching of coral reefs causes the raise in temperature which posse's danger to the living organisms found in the oceans.
Global warming is also known to cause human disease problems in relation to the environment. This is a result in increase in temperature that is known to favour some living organisms. The viral diseases spread faster in a warm temperature as compared to cool temperature. For instance the higher temperatures would promote high chances of infection of malarial disease which, has been known globally to be one of the major killer disease especially in dry areas (Tung, 1995). Moreover, in the perspective of contingency, it has been noted that some birds and animals would migrate to drier regions. These migrations might come with air borne diseases that might be detrimental to human beings. Diseases such as plague have been known to come about due to the insurgence of pests such as locust that invade a drier region.
In addition, the high temperatures tend to increase the, mortality rate of a given population. Research has indicated that high temperatures have been associated with cardiovascular diseases. There are cases which have been reported to arise such as heart stroke which arise due to higher temperatures. This is as a result of the dilation process that takes place in the human blood system and, poses as a health hazard. Respiratory problems are prone to occur due to the elevated temperatures. The ozone layer is made to come at lower atmosphere due to high temperatures. This ozone layer acts as a harmful pollutant to the environment as it promotes respiratory problems. It causes more problems especially to people who suffer from asthma. This may be due to the air borne disease present, which survives at warm temperature, or as a result of too much dust.
Too much heat may lead to high rate of exhaustion that limits the productiveness of human beings. Low productivity would in turn lead to lower yield hence, slowing down the economic growth. High temperatures lead, to a lot of heat being generated that may cause sun burns in most individuals. Human beings would also face difficulty in the production of food. The ever changing climatic condition emanating from global warming serves as a setback in the agricultural economy (Tung, 1995). The weather condition would be unpredictable and farmers may suffer a big blow due to climatic variation changes. The elevated temperatures may lead to cracking of runways and sunken foundations in buildings. This may act as a negative impact towards the economic growth of a given nation.
In conclusion, global warming serves as a major setback in the development of the economy of a given nation. Industries are eloping up at a high rate and are posing a great challenge in environment ecosystem. The amount of pollution from industries is increasing which has left government agencies with strategic planning to be conducted. The increases in vehicles have also contributed to global warming and it has posed a challenge on better mitigation measures. The consequences of global warming may lead to the reduction in progress in the economy of the world , if proper mitigation strategies are not channelled in faster. Although some of the consequences about global warming seem to be favourable such as, summer hiking and high productivity due to high carbon dioxide present, the demerits seem to be severe. This has called for stake holders from various spheres of world to find ways of dealing with this crisis of global warming.
