It was shot at Alabama, Mexico, and the Devils Tower in Wyoming, California and India. The movie has a wonderful screenplay that was based on the book “The UFO Experience” (1972). The book was written by Dr. J. Allen Hynek who was also the movie's technical director.
The movie gives the story of a lineman in Indiana Roy Neary by name. A close encounter with a strange flying object changes his life. The unidentified flying object flew over his truck and lightly burnt the side of his face with its bright lights. The spacecraft alongside with the three others then flew off into the night skies. Roy became fascinated with the flying objects, and mental images of mountain like shapes.
Roy’s experience with the unidentified flying objects that slightly burnt his face is a close encounter. The flying objects could have killed him; it was a close collision with death. The flying objects brought out the science of astronomy since they were spacecrafts. The spacecrafts also brought out the science of technology they had developed using technological knowledge.

The science of sociology is also evident in the movie. There was a train wreck near the Delvis Tower and people who had similar obsessions as Roy, went to the scene. A mother ship lands at the scene and returns people who had been abducted many years ago. Roy is selected one of the people who will go to the mother ship to interact with the aliens. This human-alien interaction represents aliens’ social behavior. They had a good social relationship.
