Executive Summary

Lufthansa Cargo is an airline that has its headquarters in Germany. The company has grown from just one single aircraft in 1926 to owning multiple Boeing jet liners, and to becoming a world class passenger and cargo service industry. Lufthansa has continued to post positive results despite negative effects such as the global economic downturn. It has also maintained good management and leadership policies serving as an example to the rest of the world. Its success is reflected in its company culture and also in its dynamic organizational structure. Lufthansa also boasts of a super cargo service that serves the entire world. Its cargo department has continually shown improvement and success since it was started.

Introduction

Lufthansa airlines are also known as the Deutsche Airlines. It is a Germany’s flag carrier and the fourth largest airline in the world. It operates 18 destinations at home and 203 destinations across the world (Torry, 2012).

Short History

Lufthansa started its operations way back in 1926 until all services were stopped due to World War II. The company was reformed in 1953 after the war and got its current name. Lufthansa has since grown to become the company that it is by increasing its destinations, services and purchasing new and modern aircrafts as time goes by.

The Company

Adding its partners, the company has over 710 aircrafts and ranks number two as the company with the largest passenger airline service (Lufthansa, 2010). As a corporation, 80% of Lufthansa is owned by private investors, while the rest is shared by different entities. The company employs approximately120, 000 workers. According to the company vision, their aim is to stick to their course by maintaining sustainable and profitable growth. Lufthansa had got branches throughout the world, but its main headquarters are in Deutz, Cologne (Lufthansa, 2011). In terms of profits, Lufthansa’s operating profit rose from 283 million Euros to 361 million Euros in 2012. The company offers all of the usual airline services.

Lufthansa has many branches in different countries, which have their own missions, visions, organizational culture, and philosophy. For instance, the Ireland branch has a constant goal, which is to develop and sustain secure surroundings for every employee and visitor. The manner in which safety is attained is well outlined in the company’s safety statement (Lufthansa, 2012). The company’s objectives echo that there is a need for collaboration if safety at the work place is to be realized. Organizational Structure

Lufthansa is run by a top-down organizational structure. The company had a different organizational structure before January 2011, when Carsten Spohr took over as the position of the company’s chairman and spearheaded changes in the organizational structure to meet the changing needs of the environment. The company has Munich and Frankfurt branches, which are run by directors. There are also the sales and revenue management, finance and human resources managers all of whom report to the Chief Executive Officer (Davis, 1991). I aspire to work in the cargo and freight department. This department has an organizational structure that consists of a Chief executive officer, chairman of the board, vice chairman of the board and several directors. There is also the finance and human resources manager, the operations manager, the product and sales manager, and an animal lounge director who reports to the operations manager.

For instance, during the global crisis when many companies were firing lower level workers, Lufthansa laid off only executive officers (Lufthansa, 2012). I love working in a dynamic and challenging organization and Lufthansa cargo offers me this challenge. I like serving people and ensuring that services are delivered on time.
