Introduction

Tartuffe, Faust, The Guest and Notes from Undergrounds were written in old times. Each of the work has themes and styles which enable the reader to understand and get the message. Tartuffe is a famous theoretical comment written by Moliere. People have liked the work because of the application of humor. Faust is a Germany legend etched by Rembrandt. The legend acts as a base for many artistic, cinematic, musical and literary works. Notes from underground are a novel written in 1894 by Fyodor. It is considered by many people as the first existentialist novel. The Guest, written by Albert Camus is a short story.

Tartuffe

In the plot, Orgon’s family was in trouble because Orgon and his mother had fallen in a trap of fraud by Tartuffe. Tartuffe pretended to be pious and used to speak with divine authority. Organ and his mother consulted him before doing anything. Orgon announced that he would give his daughter, “Mariane”, to Tartuffe. This news made Mariane feel up set, and family members realized that Tartuffe had involved himself deeply to their family. The family sets a trap to Tartuffe to show Orgon that Tartuffe was a wicked man and did not deserve to be involved with family issues. They organize a plan on how Tartuffe will seduce Elmire. They had a plan that when Orgon will know that Tartuffe seduced another lady he will chase him away. Tartuffe indeed seduces Elmire, and their interview was integrated by Orgon’s son, Damis. Damis told what h happened, but Tartuffe used reverse psychology and accused himself to be the worse sinner, a guilty man and an unhappy sinner. Organ got convinced and accused his son and chased him from the house.

Tartuffe ordered that the Damis should be told a lesson to avoid repetition of the behavior in the future. As a punishment to Damis and the rest of the family, Orgon signed everything the family owned to Tartuffe. Elmire decided to take up the challenge and told Orgon that Tartuffe seduced her. Orgon did not accept because he believed in Tartuffe. Orgon hide under the table and listened to every word Tartuffe told Elmire. When Elmire refused, Tartuffe wanted top rape her, but Orgon got out of the table and chased him out of the house. Tartuffe ordered Orgon family to leave the house because it belonged to him. Finally, he went with a police officer who arrested him instead of Orgon.

The author of the story brings across the theme of discrimination and mistreatment. Orgon’s family has being mistreated by Tartuffe because of lack of knowledge. Organ decided to give his daughter to Tartuffe. The daughter was engaged to another man, but discrimination made Orgon give the daughter to Tartuffe. The aspect of tradition comes across when Orgon decided to give out her daughter to a man for marriage. This shows that in that society girls did not decide who to marry, but they waited for their fathers to decide.

Faust

Faust is disappointed and bored. Faust decided to call upon the devil in order to get powers to get all the pleasures of the world. The devil did not hesitate to come. He appeared and made a bargain with Faust. The devil accepted to give Faust magic power, but with exchange of his soul at the end of the contract. Faust served Mephistopheles in many ways. He helped him to seduce an innocent girl called Gretchen. At the end, Gretchen pleaded with God, and he forgave her and accepted her in heaven. Faust believed that his sins could not be forgiven, and after death the Devil carried him to Hell. The story talks more about spiritual issues. It has a theme of religion. There is also the theme of power. Faust was seeking power, and as a result, he asked Devil to give him magic power.

Notes from Underground

The notes have an introduction, three main body sections and conclusion. Chapter 2 and 3 talks about human suffering and enjoyment while chapter five and six deals with moral vacillations. Chapter seven to nine explains the theories of logic and reason and the last two chapters are summary.  In the text, the author describes war as rebellion against assumption. The narrator described happiness in regard to his toothache and liver pain. He states that those who suffer tell other people about their pain in order to pass the pain to them.  The story explains more about the life of people. The author writes using the theme of happiness and suffering.

The Guest

The story of The Guest takes place in Algeria. It begins with 2 men climbing a slope with many rock. The two men mate a school teacher named Daru. Balducci one of the two men told Daru that he was ordered by the government to take the Arab prisoner to police headquarters. Daru is left with the prisoner to take him to police headquarters, but instead he gives him food and tells him to decide whether to go to police or hide. The theme in the story is complete neutrality can be attained. This is evidenced when Daru leaves the prisoner to decide where to go.

Conclusion

The four stories are set in traditional society. They give readers an understanding of the old society and changes which have taken place. Readers of the story should not apply the themes since a lot has changed.
