Shane Koyczan had turned down numerous offers from home and abroad to start his own Mother Press Media and published Visiting Hours which was his first collection of poetry. A couple of months after its release, this book sold almost 3000 copies and seems to be on a second print run. Guardian listed it among the 2005 books of the year. Shane Koyczan earns only from his poetry and performance. Along with TOFU (Tons of Fun University), he has performed numerous literary events and festivals.

Shane Koyczan was born in Yellowknife. He was not a popular student in high school and always struggled to communicate. After attending high school, he went to Okanogan University where Nancy Holmes who was his creative writing teachers suggested that he should concentrate on poetry rather than fiction. This idea was a success and Shane started poetry nights with his friend at a local Café.

Shane Koyczan is very much a contemporary poet and his publishers are noted for their innovation and use of new expertise. Shane uses Myspace, Youtube, and other technique of getting his work public. His support is so strong that when he was lately robbed, his Myspace friends grouped together to offer support and what ever help they could give. Shane Koyczan moved to Vancouver and persisted to perfect his skill at musical nights and competitions of poetry. He had this exceptional performing style where he would perform at home for a neutral audience. Shane Koyczan won the National Poetry Slam championship in 2000 in Rhode Island. There were more than 300 competitors and became the first winner from outside the United States.

David Robinson praised his performance at the Edinburgh International Book festival in 2005 as the best of the night. In 2004 he won the CBC radio poetry face off challenge. Shane Koyzcan has won many awards around the world. He has a very different fan base which ranges from teenagers to adults to musicians such as Gordon Downey, Dave Bidini, Ani DiFranco and Joel Pott to writers such as Patrick Neate and Maya Angelou. He was a success in different countries but what he lacked was fame in Canada but that changed in 2004. Shane Koyczan was set to perform at the Vancouver International Writers and Readers festival where a sponsorship poem competition took place. His performance was of just seven minutes but the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

One of the board members at this festival, Sandy Garossino, who later became the co-founder of Mother Press Media, assisted Shane in securing a book deal. They soon were struck with the reality that an established publisher will not support and care for his career. Sandy came up with some financial muscle and she brought Kim McArthur from McArthur and Company who issue the book and with the help of Chrystalene Buhler who was a Vancouver editor, Mother press Media was formed. There are numerous poetry titles and novels under Mother Press Media. Shane Koyczan's latest novel, Stickboy, is about a boy who is bullied by his classmates for many years. He cannot handle it any more and turns into a bully himself. Shane brings tremendous energy and skill to every show. His affection, humor and honesty are a success with crowds of all ages. His lyricism motivates spectators and readers because Shane's poems converse straightforwardly to the heart.
