He has a very different fan base which ranges from teenagers to adults to musicians such as Gordon Downey, Dave Bidini, Ani DiFranco and Joel Pott to writers such as Patrick Neate and Maya Angelou. He was a success in different countries but what he lacked was fame in Canada but that changed in 2004. Shane Koyczan was set to perform at the Vancouver International Writers and Readers festival where a sponsorship poem competition took place. His performance was of just seven minutes but the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

One of the board members at this festival, Sandy Garossino, who later became the co-founder of Mother Press Media, assisted Shane in securing a book deal. They soon were struck with the reality that an established publisher will not support and care for his career. Sandy came up with some financial muscle and she brought Kim McArthur from McArthur and Company who issue the book and with the help of Chrystalene Buhler who was a Vancouver editor, Mother press Media was formed.  There are numerous poetry titles and novels under Mother Press Media. Shane Koyczan's latest novel, Stickboy, is about a boy who is bullied by his classmates for many years. He cannot handle it any more and turns into a bully himself. Shane brings tremendous energy and skill to every show. His affection, humor and honesty are a success with crowds of all ages. His lyricism motivates spectators and readers because Shane's poems converse straightforwardly to the heart.
