Question A: Using the Kepner-Tregoe (K.T.) approach to evaluate situation and possible solutions.

Kepner-Tregoe approach is problem-solving model that is used to offer possible solution to problems that involve difficult decisions and resolutions. It involves weighing alternatives in a move to solve the problems in order of priority. Stages are situation analysis, decision analysis and potential problem analysis (Fogler & LeBlanc, 2008)

            2. To drop off books at the college library

            3. To check PowerPoint slides for speech before the 6 pm class

3 A list of alternatives or options (A, B, C) from which to choose.

ALL of the musts, it is a 'go' and you should continue to evaluate that alternative.

If it does NOT satisfy ANY ONE of the musts, it is a 'no go' and should not be considered further.

Alternative Solution A B C

Attend interview Attend class Drop books at the college library
Continue to print the papers Not attend interview Attend class Drop books at the college library
Continue to print the papers attend interview Attend class Check PowerPoint slides

4. A list of all the characteristics (i.e., wants) that the ideal solution should have and then rank. For example,

  • Assign a weight (i.e., 1-10) indicate how important that characteristic is.
  • Give it a rating (i.e., 0-10).
  • Weight of the Want  X  its Rating  = Score for the want for that alternative

iii) K.T. DECISION ANALYSIS

ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES

  1. In this last step in the decision-making process, we take the top-scoring potential solutions and make a list of all the things that could possibly go wrong if we were to choose each alternative.
  • Evaluate the probability (0-10) that the adverse consequence will occur.
  • Evaluate the seriousness (0-10) of the consequence if it were to occur
  • Probability X Seriousness = Threat to the success of the decision.

If the Threat total remains the lower number for the highest scoring alternative in the decision analysis, then there are insufficient adverse consequences to change the initial decision.

iv) K.T. POTENTIAL PROBLEM ANALYSIS

Potential Problem Possible Causes Preventive Action Contingent Action
A. failing to drop books at the  college library

1. coming late from the interview
