The movie initially followed the popular documentary regarding the global warming effect which was previously produced by Paramount Classics and narrated by Albert Gore, the ex-Vice President of the United States of America. ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’ focused on purely criticism; however, this criticism was put together quite well, so that the evidence collected turned into a great story.

The movie is narrated by one person with many people shown on the movie expressing their theories, thoughts, and ideas about the non-existence of global warming effect, at least not to the extent proposed by the mass media and climate organizations. The people shown are scientists, mainly specialists on climate and geography. However, the movie also refers to chemists, biologists, and physicists.

Such abundance of people supporting the idea of the global warming ‘swindle’ creates and impression that the presented data is true. However, there has been a lot of criticism of the movie. Despite the fact that the movie presented a lot of data about climate and its real determinants, many details have been heavily criticized. However, even though the criticism presented a large campaign in press, the producer of the documentary film – Marin Durkin - remained with his strong opinion that this criticism does not change the initial idea of the documentary.

According to IMDB (2007), the movie won the prestigious award ‘Io Isabella International Film Week’ in 2007 – the year it had been released. At the same time, despite the criticism it was broadcast worldwide, and many people have become supporters of the movie thereafter.

Introduction to movie comparison

Both the ‘Inconvenient Truth’ and ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’ focus on the global warming. However, the movies are different by purpose and by data presentation. Comparing two movies is possible due to the fact that the second movie refers for excerpts from the first movie in its plot. At the same time, the ideas presented in both movies are very similar and include the following:

  • The relation between CO2 production and the temperature;
  • The causes of climate;
  • The change of climate and its possible outcomes to mankind.

These three issues are the key topics of both movies. However, in both movies they are presented differently. Therefore, the detailed examination and comparison between the two documentary films is proposed in the section below.

Despite the fact that the documentaries have the same topic – global warming effect – they differ by message that is sent to the viewer of the film. ‘The Inconvenient Truth’ is set to alarm the viewer about the importance of global warming effect to mankind and its inevitable influence on modern climate change, while ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’ focuses on purely criticism of the existing information about the global warming effect and its impact on modern climate change even throwing discredit upon the fact of climate change itself.

The second most important thing to note about the difference between two movies is the way that the information is presented. ‘The Inconvenient Truth’ is shot with participation of Albert Gore being the narrator and the core actor of the movie. Even though the ex-Vice President of the United States plays himself, there is some degree of acting in what we see. At the same time, ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’ aims at presenting people as they are and providing information with less emotional content possible. In ‘The Inconvenient Truth’, there is a lot of fiction, nicely selected music as well as images that are set to create more anxiety about the topic. ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’ only focuses on the facts, and the plot of the movie is simply putting the facts together into one big story.

The core fact that is discussed in both movies is the dependency between the temperature growth and the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. ‘The Inconvenient Truth’ explains that the CO2 is important factor that fosters the heating of earth caused by the greenhouse gases. The explanation is provided with the help of simple yet colorful cartoon to reach the emotional side of the viewer. ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’ shows the graphs and scientific data that proves the opposite connection between the CO2 and the temperature growth. According to the data obtained in the documentary, the CO2 increase follows the temperature growth, but the temperature growth is not caused by the CO2 increase in the atmosphere. In proving this fact the movie story refers to ‘The Inconvenient Truth’ and criticizes the facts presented by Albert Gore to the audience.

Conclusions

In general, both documentaries are powerful sources of data about the global warming effect. However, after viewing both of them, it is very difficult to distinguish truth from propaganda. Nonetheless, the documentaries help understand the fact that global warming is closely tied to political context.
