I would call my participation in the team work last week very effective and productive. I will explain why. The team was a bid one, which means it was too congested. Although some components that make up a good team were there (a group of people, common aim, making decisions), others were absent. Specifically, there was not enough respect in the team: while some members wanted to dominate, others were silenced and not allowed to talk (because there was left no room for them to talk actually); communication was ineffective for the very same reason of dominating team members suppressing the rest of the team; collaboration was not achieved either (since decisions were influenced by domineering speakers); equality was not achieved either (since dominant speakers did not invite others to speak or did not let them speak by speaking too much themselves); no confidentiality between the members of the team because there was not enough commitment to achieve the goal as a team; the work was rather a symbiosis of a few independent initiatives.

In the team, I took the role of a monitor/evaluator (made attempts to provide accurate judgments, act strategically and act in a serious manner weighing all options), a team-worker (co-operated, listened, acted diplomatically, and acted in a mild manner), and implementer (acted reliably and in a disciplined manner, attempted to take practical steps). Unfortunately, my participation did not change the way the team worked since there was hardly any room for any changes due to lack of time.

Teamwork in nursing ensures better patient outcomes. Indeed, patient care improves and strengthens as each member of the team works towards attaining the common goal – to improve the patient’s condition. Leonard, Graham & Bonacum argue that teamwork in combination with effective combination are an integral part of the process of medical care delivery since they ensure safe patient care. Given the complex nature of medical care, communication between medical staff and their work as a team helps to “create an environment where individuals can speak up and express their concerns, and share common “critical language to alert team members to unsafe situations” (Leonard, Graham & Bonacum, 2004). Such approach will help to identify and handle changes in a patient through communication between all team members. While physicians are responsible for ordering adequate interventions, nurses account for carrying it out. Working as a team and communicating all concerns and thoughts about the patient’s condition, more efficient care is delivered.
Supervision is important in nursing since it
a) enhances the functioning of the supervisee as a professional
b) monitors the quality of delivered services
c) helps to develop staff relationships to junior members/supervisees
d) helps to uncover the nurse’s spontaneity as well as creativity, which will benefit a patient through the nurse’s committed attitude
e) it clarifies many complex things to a supervisee, so that the latter can work more enthusiastically
f) it helps to build a professional personality of a nurse step by step (Consedine, 2004)

Role of a nurse
Just as the field of health care is the priority of any modern society, the role of nurses is significant in comparison with the roles of professionals working in other spheres. Nurses notice the slightest changes in patients’ conditions and they can prevent even lethal outcomes. They provide care to people when they are on verge of death. They serve as psychologists, supporters, advisers, advocates of patients’ rights, educators, and, of course, medical care providers in people’s most critical life moments. Just as life is the biggest asset for any person, it is the nurse who helps to retain this asset and improve its quality.
1.3 Explain a range of ethical and moral dilemmas faces by nurses within a working environment.(case study 300 words).
Case Study 1
This case study presents the following ethical dilemma: whether to respect the patient’s religious beliefs and autonomy and compromise my moral and professional duty as a nurse or to administer medical care according to set standards but violate the patient’s religious belief. While it is clear that these option are mutually exclusive, which is typical for an ethical dilemma, the decision still needs to be made. By application of the virtue ethics to this case, one centers on what is morally right from the perspective of a patient. Thus, the virtue ethics supports the patient’s autonomy.
Applying Volbrecht’s framework for conducting ethical analysis in order to solve the dilemma, one needs to identify the problem, analyze the context, explore options, apply the decision process, carry out the plan and assess the outcomes (Volbrecht, 2002). The problem is whether to opt for the woman’s physical survival or to allow her keep to her religious belief. In terms of the context, the patient wants to be faithful to her religious belief. On the other hand, medical staff are required to respect patients’ decisions and wishes according to the nursing code of ethics or other legal documents. Applying the ethical decision, one should agree to support the patient’s perspective since it is essential that the patient’s informed decision be considered. Following the principle of beneficence, the patient’s spiritual well-being is retained, which becomes a priority in this particular case. To add, the principle of maleficence is important here, which would see the violation of the woman’s wish on the basis of her religious belief as harm. Evaluating the result of conforming to the patient’s wish, one would need to state that the patient’s death is the result of her rejection of blood transfusion. While it is morally unbearable to watch the woman die on the basis of her religious belief, the nurse should consider that it was an informed decision and the consciously made choice.

The analysis of the ethical approach confirms that by the virtue ethics, the patient’s wish should be respected above all and patient’s directives should be honored. Still, clear guidelines are needed to be developed so as to protect health providers from bearing responsibility for the patient’s death in similar cases. The approach might seem kind of unreasonable (the patient loses her life), yet it is based on due respect of the patient’s autonomy and cultural convictions. Thus, it correlates with the emphasis on provision of holistic care, the one which considers the patient as one whole.
