Pornography has been a major issue over the centuries. Visual and written contents related to sex have been blamed on wooing the young generation to immorality and promoting sexual discriminations in the society. A fight to minimize the content of sexually stimulating texts and images has been an ongoing for a long period of time. In his book, John Semonche identifies the government’s efforts to censor book contents by advocating for a clean books bill (10). However, these efforts were faced by a number of oppositions, especially from publishers and authors who termed the move as a far-reaching confrontation to the American literature freedom. These oppositions caused the failure of the content regulations by the proposed bill. Subsequent concerns lad to a new way of censorship that constituted punishing of the publications (Semonche 12). The move led to a restriction on the inflow of pornographic material in the US. However, there was still an internal circulation; in 1897, the US congress curbed this by criminalizing it.

Following the development and growth of the use of the Internet in the modern society, major impacts have been noted in the place of pornography. First, there is easy access of the content by most of the youth who are frequent users and subscribers of the Internet. The Internet has provided an opportunity for individuals to manipulate and produce pornographic materials without necessarily involving other people. This was after the development of the software utilized in the production of animations. Photographs are being manipulated to produce this effect. Producers are now considering the production of these contents in 3D, for example, the 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, which was realized in April 2011 inHong Kong. In the United States, a number of sites also have been established for adult entertainment. These sites contain varied pornographic content. Additionally, the internet providers have formulated a method where subscribers can pay for the services and are at liberty to access any content they desire. These developments have overtaken the sale of print materials, which was a major source of the pornography for most people.
The anti-pornographic society generally constitutes of feminist individuals who are of the view that pornography is a source of violence against women. These claims have been ascertained by the Campaign against Pornography & Censorship (CPC) group, which claims that pornography is a major cause of sexual violence against women. According to Pollard, pornography is a major contributor to rape and other forms of sexual discriminations (2). The anticensorship position on the other hand advocates for reforming of the major factors through an assenting action. Individuals in support of this position claim that censorship of the pornographic material is a move by the government to keep a hold on women.
In the wake of claims made by various individuals concerning the negative effects of pornography on the society, the government set up a commission to study these claims. The commission concluded that these claims had no sufficient evidence. In essence, they recommended that the adult society should be allowed to access their chosen mode of entertainment without restrictions. A number of individuals seem to have come up in opposition of this report by the Commission set by the Attorney General. Claims are being made that these materials tend to promote child participation in immoral behaviors and encourage violence against women. Dr. Judith Reisman considers the commissions stand as ignorant of the effects and dangers that these materials have on children (Baptist Pillar par. 22). Dr. James Dobson makes the same sentiments (Baptist Pillar par. 23). Many people are awed by this report and consider the commission’s stand as a major contradiction; questions arise as to whether the officials are in support of the safety of its people or of their own interests.
