Why are the processes of mitosis and meiosis both important to a living organism?
The process of mitosis is important to a living organism because it is the process through which its cells divide and form new cells. Mitosis is fundamental for an organism’s normal development given that it guarantees that the body continues replicating chromosomes and cells (which, of course, are necessary for organisms to continue living). On the other hand, the process of meiosis is important because it also guarantees that a living organism’s development is normal. Meiosis makes it possible for organisms to replicate germ cells; it makes it possible for organisms to continue reproducing.
When would an organism need to undergo the process of mitosis?
Living organisms undergo the process of mitosis all of the time. Mitosis is required for cell growth, development, repair, and even reproduction. All cellular processes that take place inside of a living organism require cellular replication, which in turn requires mitosis. Billions of cells die every day because of apoptosis. Mitosis is important because it allows for these dead cells to be replaced by new, live cells (that ultimately allow for organisms to continue living).

When would an organism need to undergo the process of meiosis?
An organism would need to undergo the process of meiosis for reproductive purposes. The continued survival and existence of all organisms in Earth are dependent on their ability to reproduce. And it can only be done through germ cells, which are the type of cells that result from meiosis.
What would happen if meiosis did not occur?
If meiosis did not occur, then there would be no germ cells, or sex cells, for either plant or animal organisms to reproduce. In other words, if meiosis did not occur then organisms would be unable to reproduce and it would signify the extinction of all species (given that all organisms would die without producing new offspring).
