Introduction

Fraternity is a group of organized men who have come together for common and special interests. It is also a state of brotherliness. Fraternity is different from other associations in that the members interact freely with each other and there is a mutual benefit. Other associations are based on religion, commercial purposes or family relations.  Fraternities are commonly based on education, work, politics and ethnicity among others (McWilliams, 2003).

Issues of diversity in the fraternity

The roots of fraternities can be traced back from the early college curriculum where the college tutors taught classics rather than liberal arts. During this time, the fraternities were based on literary ground. However, the social fraternities later overtook these as more colleges turned towards the liberal arts. In these social fraternities, diversity is a common issue. Diversity is a combination of similarities and differences among an association of people where they take into account all human factors without any discrimination.  Diversity is very important in a fraternity since people will benefit from others’ varies abilities and knowledge. Diversity is therefore necessary for mutual benefit. For example in a fraternity that is based on literary, people can benefit from the knowledge that others have (Houser,& Ham, 2004).

Group work and group dynamics in a fraternity

Group work is also very important for the survival of a fraternity. Most fraternities hold brotherhood activities all along the year where every member is expected to participate. These are team-building activities that are done to promote teamwork and networking. Therefore, to ensure that people benefit equally, they must work as one team. Teamwork also enables the members of the fraternity to bond together and develop a strong relationship. In the ending phase, teamwork helps in ensuring that every member of the group leaves with equal benefits. It ensures that none of them benefits more than others. Team building activities also helps the members to build trust with each other and facilitates communication among the group.

Their guiding group dynamics principles should also be those that can be understood by every member. This is because the members of the group may be having different attributes of age, gender, race, religion, abilities, and origin, among others. The fraternity should maintain norms, roles, and relations that are comfortable with every member.

Leadership skills and tasks of ending phase

Leadership skills that are required in a fraternity include ability to keep people together. The leader must have words that will strengthen the bonds and keep the group running. He or she must therefore have leadership qualities. The leader must also involve leadership tasks that will help in strengthening the group. Such tasks may include picnics, group discussions, and team building activities.  A fraternity also helps one to develop courage and to develop life goals and leadership skills. Leaders may divide the fraternity into small chapters consisting of certain number of people. These may help one to learn things such as delegating and taking responsibilities, planning of activities, decision making, and problem solving abilities.

Maintaining changes achieved in and/or by the group

During the period that one is in the fraternity, there are so many things that are learnt which may change one’s life or attitude. It is however very important to maintain the changes that occur to an individual. To achieve this, it is important to maintain contacts with the members of the fraternity even after the ending phase. This will help one to live associating with the changes that took places, just as he will be associating with the members of the fraternity. Follow up is also important by the leaders of the fraternity. Some people make a lot of positive changes in their life after joining the fraternity and if they are not followed up, they may get stuck along the way. Those who have gained new abilities may also need follow up so that thy can make better use of the abilities. This will eventually help them to maintain the changes. The changes achieved by the group must also be followed up by every member of the group so that they may continue enjoying the benefits (McWilliams, 2003).

Losses and separations in lives of members and leaders as they affect group’s ending

The members may get affected by separation as the duration of the fraternity ends. Some of them may start acting slowly towards the group activities and the leaders may also start losing concentration on their leadership skills. It is therefore important to maintain high spirits until the last minute of the group.

Evaluating techniques

Evaluation is important since it helps the members of the fraternity to know what they have achieved. Evaluation can be done at a personal level and at the group level. At the personal level, it can be done to see the extent at which the members have personally benefitted from the fraternity. At the group level, it will seek to identify the common benefits that the entire group has gained. This can be done by use of questionnaires where the members will answer questions concerning their benefits in the fraternity.

Life Course and Group

This looks at how the fraternity affects the future decisions of the members after they leave the group. This mostly depends on what the members learn while in the group. However, this is not usually a problem since the members leave the fraternity while fully equipped with decision making skills, how to plan activities and also taking up various responsibilities. Most of them therefore leave the fraternity while they are fully equipped to face various decisions in the future. Since the members may be from different countries of origin, races, age, sex and religion, each of them will apply the concepts in regard to his or her context.

Connections between reading and/or didactic class materials

In the fraternity, the members may learn various concepts that may improve their abilities in the performance of their duties. These concepts may be very useful in facing real life situations. For example, a fraternity may be made up of business-oriented people who may be sharing business ideas. The person may leave the place with business ideas which he or she may use in his/her business.

Conclusion

Belonging to a certain group is a very important factor in life. It enables one to feel a sense of belonging and gives one an opportunity to learn. The concepts learnt in the fraternity may also help one in the life situations after leaving the group.
